Production Run of Oilfield Draw Works Skids
Since 1973, Signal Metal Industries, Inc. has been providing a full range of in-house fabrication, machining, and welding services to customers across various heavy industries. We specialize in the fabrication of complex parts that can meet virtually any delivery schedule regardless of material or design complexity. For oil & gas industry customers, we offer the expertise and flexibility to act as a supply chain partner. We're experts in developing proprietary welding procedures and have large scale milling capabilities that allow us to take on projects that most fabricators will not even quote.
In this project, an oilfield client in Texas required quick turn manufacturing of draw works skids. Each 25,000 lb. unit had overall part dimensions of 23' x 10' x 7' with tolerances as tight as + 0.001". The project required welding and machining of A36, A572 WF beam, A633, A514 (T1), and steel tubing. We leveraged an array of processes including steel fabrication, CNC beam coping, CNC machining, flame cutting, plasma cutting, CNC press brake forming, plate rolling, welding, sandblasting, and painting. In order to reduce production time and increase each unit's accuracy, each of the large weldments were milled in a single setup. Backed by our NACE-certified coatings department, we applied a 3-part coating that was designed to withstand harsh marine environments. Each unit underwent an extensive testing and inspection process using NDT, dimensional verification, Faro laser tracker inspection system, and coating analysis. The project involved seamless coordination between departments, ensuring that each phase of the job was performed to our customer's exact specifications.
They were impressed by our ability to handle large volume runs using a combination of welding, machining, and coating. This job was a culmination of experience and aptitude between our welders, machinists, CNC programmers, and technicians. As a result of our success, we're now a priority supplier with the capability to supply the frames at a rate of 6 per month.
